After the construction was completed and the construction teams withdrew, the China Three Gorges Corporation, adhering to the principle of "ecological priority and green development," actively carried out ecological restoration. Over 19,000 trees and 600,000 square meters of grass and shrubs have been planted, forming the multi-layered, multi-structural, and multi-functional West Ecological Landscape Area that integrates trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers. In 2011, the water and soil conservation facilities of the Three Gorges Project passed national acceptance. Its design philosophy and prevention technologies have provided valuable experience for soil and water conservation in China's large-scale water conservancy projects. 车辆前方即将经过六闸首大桥，在您的右手边是三峡工程两个永久性通航建筑物之一的双线五级连续梯级船闸。它是目前世界上落差最大、级数最多、技术最复杂的内河船闸，从花岗岩山体内人工开挖而成，上下游水位最大落差113米，船闸按双线连续五级布置，北线上行、南线下行，每一级闸室长280米，宽34米。闸室之间的人字门高38.5米，宽20.2米，厚3米，重约900吨，一扇门的面积接近两个篮球场地。过完一级闸室的时间大约需要40分钟，过完整个船闸大约需要3~4个小时，一次性可通过6000吨级船舶或万吨级船队。

On your right hand side is one of the Two permanent navigation structures of the Three Gorges Project: the Twin-Line Five-Stage Continuous Ship Lock.It is currently the world's largest inland ship lock with the highest water level drop, the most stages, and the most complex technology. It was manually excavated from within a granite mountain body, with a maximum water level difference of 113 meters between its upstream and downstream sections. The ship lock is arranged as a double-line continuous five-level system, with the north line designated for upstream traffic and the south line for downstream traffic. Each lock chamber is 280 meters long and 34 meters wide. The miter gates between the lock chambers stand 38.5 meters tall, 20.2 meters wide, and 3 meters thick, weighing approximately 900 tons each. The area of a single gate is nearly equivalent to two basketball courts. Passing through one lock chamber takes about 40 minutes, while navigating the entire ship lock requires approximately 3 to 4 hours. It can accommodate a one-time passage of 6,000-ton vessels or 10,000-ton fleets.

Here on your right hand side, you'll see another permanent navigation structure of the Three Gorges Project — the Three Gorges Ship Lift. It's the largest and most technologically advanced ship lift in the world. It can lift a 3,000-ton passenger or cargo ship in one go, with a maximum lifting capacity of 15,500 tons and a vertical rise of up to 113 meters. Passing through it takes about 40 minutes. Working together with the double-line five-stage ship lock, this ship lift greatly boosts the overall navigation capacity of the Three Gorges.

早在1918年，民主革命先驱孙中山先生在实业计划中提出，当以水闸堰其水，使舟得以溯流以行，又可资其水利。这是第一次正式提出改善川江航道，利用三峡水能发电的设想。
As early as 1918, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a pioneer of the democratic revolution, proposed in his "The International Development of China" the idea of using sluice gates to harness the water, allowing boats to navigate upstream and generating hydroelectric power. This was the first formal proposal to improve the navigation of the Chuanjiang river section and utilize Three Gorges hydropower.

1944年美国著名坝工专家萨凡奇在扬子江三峡初步计划报告中，建议在宜昌南津关此处修建大坝，建成后发挥发电、灌溉、防洪、航运四大效益。
Back in 1944, John L. Savage, a famous American dam engineering expert, suggested building a dam here at Nanjinguan in Yichang in his Preliminary Report on the Yangtze Gorges Project. Once completed, it would exert four benefits of power generation, irrigation, flood control and navigation.

新中国成立后，党和国家几代领导人无不关注和心系三峡工程。1956年，毛主席视察武汉，写下《水调歌头游泳》：“更立西江石壁，截断巫山云雨，高峡出平湖，神女应无恙，当今世界殊”。描绘了三峡工程建设的宏伟蓝图。

葛洲坝水利枢纽工程

1970年12月30日，万里长江第一坝葛洲坝工程开工，1988 年葛洲坝工程全部建成。葛洲坝工程缓解了华中地区电力紧缺的局面，同时，培养、锻炼了水利水电工程专业队伍，为建设三峡工程积累了宝贵经验。
Back on December 30, 1970, construction kicked off on the Gezhouba Dam project—the first dam built on the mighty Yangtze River. It was fully completed by 1988. The Gezhouba Project alleviated power shortages in central China and, crucially, trained and built up a skilled team of water conservancy and hydropower engineers., accumulating invaluable experience for the construction of the Three Gorges Project.

1992年4月3日，七届全国人大五次会议表决通过了《关于兴建长江三峡工程的决议》。至此，三峡工程迎来了波澜壮阔的建设历程。

Dear tourists, the vehicle is about to pass the Xiling Yangtze River Bridge, which is named after its location in the Xiling Gorge. The Xiling Yangtze River Bridge was completed and opened to traffic in 1996, with a total length of 1118.66 meters, a single span of 900 meters and a load capacity of 290 tons. Under the bridge, you can see an artificially built diversion dike, which plays the role of power generation with flowing water and navigation with still water.


大家右手边，看到的就是三峡工程的枢纽部分，它由拦河大坝、电站厂房和通航建筑物三大核心部分构成。拦河大坝轴线全长 2309 米，海拔高度 185 米。三峡水电站由左岸电站、右岸电站、地下电站和电源电站组成，共安装 32 台 70 万千瓦水轮发电机组和 2 台 5 万千瓦水轮发电机组，总装机容量 2250 万千瓦。通航建筑物，由双线五级船闸和垂直升船机组成。工程历时17年，采取了一级开发、一次建成、分期蓄水、连续移民的建设方案。
On your right-hand side, you can see the complex project. It consists of three parts: the dam spanning the river, the power stations, and the navigation structures. The axis of the dam stretches 2,309 meters in length and stands 185 meters above sea level. The Three Gorges Hydropower Station is made up of the left bank power station, the right bank power station, an underground power station, and an auxiliary power station. Altogether, it’s equipped with 32 hydro-turbine generator units of 700 MW each, plus 2 smaller units of 50 MW each, adding up to a total installed capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts. The navigation facilities include a double-line five-stage ship lock and a vertical ship lift. The whole project took 17 years to complete and followed a construction scheme that emphasized single-stage development, one-time completion, phased impoundment, and continuous resettlement.

三峡大坝的坝址选在长江三峡西陵峡中段的宜昌市三斗坪镇。两岸青山如黛，西陵峡的奇峻峡谷地貌绵延铺展，绝壁陡崖间藏着三峡的原始风貌，与下游葛洲坝的身影遥相呼应。风拂过江面时，裹挟着峡江的清润气息，远处云雾缭绕山间，桥、山、江、坝融为一体，既有“峡口锁江”的雄浑壮阔，又含山水相依的灵秀柔美，尽展“楚之西塞”的千年风华。
The dam site for the Three Gorges Dam was selected in Sandouping Town, Yichang City, within the middle section of the Xiling Gorge. Verdant mountains flank the river as the majestic gorge topography of Xiling unfolds. Sheer cliffs and steep ridges conceal the original landscape of the Three Gorges, echoing the silhouette of the downstream Gezhouba Dam. When the wind sweeps across the river, it carries the fresh, moist air of the River. Distant clouds and mist curl around the mountains, blending the bridge, mountains, river, and dam into one harmonious scene. Itembodies both the heroic grandeur of "the entrance of the Three Gorges locking the river" and the delicate beauty of interdependent landscape, fully displaying the timeless elegance of the "Western Fortress of Chu."

在截流纪念园的对面，建有一处展示三峡工程专题的国家级博物馆---------三峡工程博物馆。2022年8月正式开馆，三峡工程博物馆是三峡工程全国爱国主义教育示范基地核心场馆，是水利部水情教育基地和三峡大坝研学基地主要场所，是开展爱国主义教育、红色教育、水电科普教育、水情教育的重要阵地。博物馆通过文物展品和现代展示技术，向大家展示三峡坝库区自然人文环境变迁、三峡工程的历史与成就、中国水电的历史与发展、水电科普知识与效益。
Opposite the River Closure Memorial Park stands the Three Gorges Project Museum, a national-level thematic museum dedicated to the project. Officially opened in August 2022, it is the core venue of the Three Gorges Project National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base, a key site for the Ministry of Water Resources' Water Education Base and the Three Gorges Project Educational Tour Base. Itserves as an important platform for conducting patriotic education, red education, hydropower science popularization, and water education. Through cultural relics, exhibits, and modern display technologies, the museum presents the changes in the natural and human environment of the Three Gorges reservoir area, the history and achievements of the Three Gorges Project, the history and development of Chinese hydropower, and knowledge about hydropower benefits.

2020年11月1日，水利部、国家发展改革委员会公布三峡工程完成整体竣工验收全部程序。根据验收结论，三峡工程建设任务全面完成，工程质量满足规程规范和设计要求，总体优良，运行持续保持良好状态。防洪、发电、航运、水资源利用等综合效益全面发挥。移民生产生活显著改善，库区基础设施、公共服务设施实现跨越式发展。移民迁建区地质环境总体安全，库区生态环境质量总体良好。
On November 1, 2020, the Ministry of Water Resources and the National Development and Reform Commission announced that the Three Gorges Project had completed all procedures for the overall completion acceptance. According to the acceptance conclusion, the construction tasks of the Three Gorges Project have been fully accomplished. The project quality meets the specifications, standards, and design requirements, is generally excellent, and operations have consistently remained in good condition. The comprehensive benefits of flood control, power generation, navigation, and water resource utilization are being fully realized. The production and living standards of relocated residents have significantly improved, with infrastructure and public service facilities in the reservoir area achieving leapfrog development. The geological environment of the resettlement areas is generally safe, and the ecological environment quality of the reservoir area is in good overall condition.

三峡工程综合效益显著，主要包括防洪、发电、航运、水资源利用和生态环境保护，对长江安澜和长江经济带高质量发展发挥了重要基础保障作用。自三峡水库蓄水运用以来，单库拦洪运用、联合梯级水库群拦洪运用累计70余次，成功应对3次洪峰超70000立方米/秒的洪水，拦洪总量超2200亿立方米，相当于50个太湖水量；长江干流梯级水库群年均向下游补水220亿立方米，累计补水超3600亿立方米，使枯水期下游流量较常年天然流量增加33%以上，积极保障供水安全；三峡工程极大改善了长江航运条件，年通过货运量最大超1.72亿吨，是三峡工程蓄水前最大年货运量的近10倍，在促进航运产业发展、降低航运成本、提高航运质量等方面发挥了重要作用，为长江经济带高质量发展注入了强劲动能。
The Three Gorges Project has yielded remarkable comprehensive benefits, primarily in flood control, power generation, navigation, water resource utilization, and ecological environmental protection. It plays a vital foundational role in ensuring the safety of the Yangtze River and supporting the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Since the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir, flood retention operations—both by the reservoir alone and in conjunction with the cascade reservoirs—have been carried out over 70 times. These efforts successfully mitigated three flood peaks exceeding 70,000 cubic meters per second, retaining a total of more than 220 billion cubic meters of floodwater, equivalent to the volume of 50 Taihu Lakes. On average, the cascade reservoirs along the mainstream of the Yangtze River supplement approximately 22 billion cubic meters of water annually to the lower reaches, with a cumulative total exceeding 360 billion cubic meters. This has increased the flow in the lower reaches during dry seasons by over 33% compared to natural levels, thereby actively safeguarding water supply security. Moreover, the Three Gorges Project has significantly improved navigation conditions on the Yangtze River, with the annual freight volume reaching a maximum of over 172 million tons—nearly ten times the pre-impoundment peak. It has played a crucial role in promoting the development of the shipping industry, reducing navigation costs, and enhancing shipping efficiency, injecting robust momentum into the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

三峡集团打造了“1+3”的长江珍稀鱼类研究保护格局：以长江珍稀鱼类保育中心为核心，再加上宜昌黄柏河基地和溪洛渡—向家坝、乌东德—白鹤滩的增殖放流点做支撑，创下了不少“世界首个”的技术突破！不仅攻克了中华鲟全人工子三代繁育的世界级难题，2025年11月还成功培育出11.2万尾子三代幼苗，彻底摆脱了对野生亲鱼的依赖。同时，还掌握了人工合成催产剂催产、大规格苗种培育等关键技术，有效守护着长江里120种鱼类的生存家园。截至目前，累计向长江放流各类珍稀鱼苗超2700万尾，2025年更是实现了中华鲟放流存活率超70%的新高。除此之外，还把技术拓展到其他珍稀鱼类，2025年成功攻克圆口铜鱼全人工繁殖技术，收获1.5万尾子二代苗种，为长江水生生物多样性恢复添上了浓墨重彩的一笔。
China Three Gorges Corporation has built a "1+3" research and protection pattern for rare fish in the Yangtze River: with the Yangtze River Rare Fish Conservation Center as the core, supported by the Huangbai River Base in Yichang and the stock enhancement and release points of Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba and Wudongde-Baihetan hydropower stations, it has made many world-first technological breakthroughs! It has not only solved the world-class problem of full artificial breeding of the third filial generation of Chinese sturgeon, but also successfully cultivated 112,000 third filial generation seedlings in November 2025, completely getting rid of the dependence on wild parent fish. At the same time, it has also mastered key technologies such as induced spawning with artificially synthesized oxytocic agents and large-size seedling cultivation, effectively protecting the living habitats of 120 fish species in the Yangtze River. Up to now, more than 27 million rare fish seedlings of various types have been released into the Yangtze River, and the survival rate of Chinese sturgeon released into the wild exceeded 70% in 2025, a new high. In addition, the technology has been extended to other rare fish species. In 2025, it successfully solved the full artificial propagation technology of the Chinese Coreius guichenoti(a type of bronze gudgeon), harvesting 15,000 second filial generation seedlings, adding significant strength to the restoration of aquatic biodiversity in the Yangtze River.

在珍稀植物保护方面，三峡集团建成了国内种类最多、规模最大的长江特有珍稀植物保育基地。迁地保护了疏花水柏枝、珙桐等特有珍稀植物2000余种、约30万株。更厉害的是，荷叶铁线蕨、红豆杉等国家一级保护植物，以及疏花水柏枝、丰都车前等国家二级保护植物，近百种珍稀植物均实现人工繁育。值得一提的是，神舟十三号飞船搭载了部分丰都车前的种子，开展航天育种，苗木已两次成功回归野外。截至目前，已有超6.1万株珍稀植物回归长江沿岸用于生态修复，其中疏花水柏枝在消落带的成活率超90%，在三峡库区生态保护中发挥了重要作用。
In terms of rare plant conservation, China Three Gorges Corporation has established the largest and most diverse ex-situ conservation base in China for rare plant species endemic to the Yangtze River basin. It protects over 2,000 species (approximately 300,000 individual plants) of endemic rare plants, such asMyricaria laxifloraand the dove tree (Davidia involucrata). Even more remarkably, nearly 100 rare plant species have been successfully artificially propagated, including first-class nationally protected plants like theAdiantum reniforme var. sinenseand the Chinese yew (Taxus chinensis), as well as second-class nationally protected plants likeMyricaria laxifloraandPlantago fengdouensis. Notably, seeds ofPlantago fengdouensiswere carried aboard the Shenzhou-13 spacecraft for space breeding experiments, and the resulting seedlings have been successfully reintroduced to the wild twice. To date, more than 61,000 rare plants have been reintroduced alongthe Yangtze River for ecological restoration. Among them,Myricaria laxiflorahas achieved a survival rate of over 90% in the water-level-fluctuation zone, playing a significant role in the ecological protection of the Three Gorges reservoir area.
