1. delay 意为“使延期，推迟”，常用于描述航班、列车等的延迟运行。

Commuters will face long delays on the roads today.

路远乘车上下班的人今天要在路上耽误很多时间了。

The start of the spring semester has been delayed for about 2 months.

春季学期的开学时间已经延迟了大约2个月了。

2. put off 尤指因出现突发的问题或不想按原定时间做某事而延期

We've had to put off our wedding until September. 

我们只得把婚期推迟到九月。

He told us that the trip would be put off. 

他告诉我们旅行将推迟。

3. postpone 多指有计划地延期，并有明确的延迟时间，常用于正式活动的延迟和改期。

We'll have to postpone the meeting until next week.

我们将不得不把会议推迟到下周举行。

The match has been postponed to a later date. 

比赛已被推迟到以后的某个日期举行。

4. keep/put something on ice 搁置某事

We’ve had to put our plans on ice for the time being due to the pandemic.

由于疫情的影响，我们目前不得不将计划搁置。

We decided to put the project on ice until we hire a new project manager.

我们决定在雇用新的项目经理之前搁置这个项目。
